"T" Tops From Northern Pickups...What Do We Think? (& Comparison With PAFs)
Переглядів 4022 місяці тому
Check out these pickups here: www.northernpickups.co.uk/t-topclone We all know about PAF pickups, right? And then Gibson got their patent, and they morphed into Patent No. pickups? But...what came next? Well, c.1967 Gibson re-tooled their classic humbuckers and changed a few things about them - and as part of the new bobbin tooling, "T" shapes were embossed into the top. So, you can see where t...
White Whale V2: Crazy Tube's Updated Reverb/Tremolo Beast!

Find out more about this pedal here: crazytubecircuits.com/white-whale-v2 In the world of analog guitar effects, one 'genre' in particular has always been tricky to get right: reverb. It can't really be done effectively with BBD's; so where does that leave us? Spring reverb is the go-to for guitarists, but as anybody who has ever seen a Fender 5G15 will tell you, the tanks & hardware need to be...
Wizz P90's In My Gibson ES-330...My Favourite Recorded Tones So Far?!
Переглядів 7923 місяці тому
You might have seen my lovely Gibson ES-330 '61 VOS Reissue on the channel before - but probably not very often. It's a gorgeous instrument, but despite the mods I've done to it, it's always never quite gotten there in terms of sound and playing experience. But I've recently made a couple of big changes to it - and wow, has it made a difference! Firstly, Matt at Monty's in Cheltenham fitted it ...
Jim Hagerman Put A Tube In A KLON!!
Переглядів 9813 місяці тому
Jim Hagerman has always been his own man in the world of pedal design - and today's offering is probably the best example yet of him taking a concept and really putting his own unique stamp on it. Enter the TUBEKLØN - yes folks, Jim has put a tube into a Klon!! Long gone are the 'mythical' Germanium diodes; the clean boost mode; and the rudimentary Low Pass Filter. All of the clipping here is b...
Bolt & Forge Ol' Ephraim Germanium Sustainer...Crunchy Distortion Heaven!
Переглядів 4463 місяці тому
A couple of months ago, I demoed a killer overdrive pedal called the Appaloosa...and now, the good folks at Bolt & Forge have sent me its brother to check out! Introducing the Ol' Ephraim Germanium Sustainer! It houses four hand-selected Germanium Diodes, and sonically sits somewhere between a fuzz and distortion. It has the thick, scoopy, woolly tones of a Big Muff; the mid-focussed sizzle of ...
Do Nashville ABR-1 Adaptors Ruin Vintage Tone?

A few months ago, I made a video comparing the Four Uncles Restorations ABR-1 bridge to some of its competitors - with some interesting results. But underneath that video, Dave Stephens (one of the Four Uncles behind that ABR-1!) left a couple of comments - and he had some views on the particular guitar that I was auditioning his bridge with. Specifically, I mentioned in the intro of that video...
Fitting A Bigsby Tailpiece To My ES-330 (w/@Montysguitarsandpickups)
Переглядів 6044 місяці тому
I first became aware of the Gibson ES-330 when I saw @GuitarDotCom's video of @WeAreLittleBarrie's 1962 ES-330 - and I absolutely fell in love with how it sounds. Barrie is a killer player of course, but his guitar really sings too. So I've tweaked my guitar (to my ears, at least!) to sound as close to his as possible. This has also recently involved fitting a set of Wizz P90s, which have been ...
Bolt & Forge Appaloosa - Tasty Germanium-Fuelled Crunch

I first came across Bolt & Forge in a thread over on TheGearPage, and the (new) company's line of pedals looked very impressive. So getting to check out the one that appealed to me the most is a real thrill. ...and it didn't disappoint. The Appaloosa is a low-medium gain overdrive pedal with a setup similar to that of a Master Volume amplifier...the Gain control is somewhat akin to a power amp ...
Hagerman Gamma Radiation (The Double DISTORT!)
Переглядів 4695 місяців тому
I've been a fan of Jim Hagerman's designs for a good while now - he really has a knack for voicing circuits to really work with minimal controls. Following in the footsteps of others trialling the concept, the Gamma Radiation doesn't arrive on your doorstep a...

The tone pot and cap is a simple frequency filter, so the cap is still affecting the sound even everything is full on but only less comparing rolling down the tone potentiometer. Say the full-on 500Kohm is giving the signal more impedance for high freq loss vs. 250Kohm or 0ohm. But back to the original topic of the capacitor type, I have no evident how sometimes the tone changes even the readings are exactly the same, but I suspect certain caps tend to have larger or smaller parasitic capacitance to whole circuit, including how close the cap sits to the adjacent cap, pots, the entire electronic cavity, etc.

I agree with your assessment. You can EQ this tone change easily with your amp, and as soon as you put any gain in the mix the difference disappears. Thanks for doing this so I don't have to. :D

While Orange has increased the amount of gain stages on the Rockerverb MK3 amps, they still fall mostly into the more vintage side of the "tonescape" in my view. I think that's actually why they are favoured by some metal players--they offer a much bigger, fuller sound than your typical high mid-heavy, fizzy and scooped amps that everyone else is making these days. Especially in this age of generic and cheap sounding modelers and effects units. If you want a big valve sound today, Orange is on top of the list for your consideration. I personally recently bought an OR30 which is more "vintage voiced" than the Rockerverb by most accounts. There's also the Rocker 15 Terror head which offers the same at a lower wattage and price. Lots of great options from Orange for people seeking that more vintage tone.

Swapping the A2O to an A5UO in my 490R turned it into a different guitar completely. Neck position is much more useable now. It got rid of that typical 490R mud and turned my middle position into an entirely different beast for a 490/498 setup.

Excuse me. The definition of alnico 5 is as an ORIENTED magnet, meaning it can only be magnetized in a specific direction. If alnico is not oriented, its either A2, A3, A4. This idea was Tim Shaw's THEORY, but he never provided any proof, and he never was a pickup designer. He is a luthier, not a pickup designer. I talked to four different alnico making companies and asked about non-oriented A5 and they ALL said there is no such thing and never was and they all thought it was a stupid question. So, one of them cast an A5 magnet for me while not being in the magnet charger during melting heat period, he sent it to me, and it had no charge at all and would not charge at all. It doesn't work. I was sent one of these Arnold un-oriented magnets and all they were was A2 magnets and sound like A2 magnets. This is nothing more than marketing hype. What guitar players need to know is that no two magnet companies use the exact same "recipes," and there is no official alloy mix that everyone is using. I buy from many different magnet companies and all their numbered alloys sound different from all the other factories. I have A5 magnets that are warm sounding, and A5 that could break glass from the high treble frequencies. Same for all the other grades. China is where we all get our magnets now and they are super super close to vintage magnets, in fact one of my videos I show both vintage and modern A2 magnets in a real PAF after a complete rewind because the coils were unsalvageable. With eyes closed you can't tell them apart. Vintage magnets aren't magic and don't make vintage sound. I am surprised this disinformation about "non-oriented A5 magnets" is still out there. A5 MEANS ORIENTED, go ask the magnet companies if you don't believe that. LOL.

You can use knobs with an allen screw on split shaft pots. You just have to align the screw to be in line with the split so that it doesn't push the two sides of the shaft together.

It may be erroneous to believe that string vibrations (with a relatively short "half life"/decay) can get that large solid body of wood (which is actually two or more pieces of wood) to sympathetically vibrate in any meaningful way, never mind enough to be audible... If anything the mounting systems tested exhibit not differences in transmission but more their resistance to same with feeds the harmonics back through the strings to the pickups... Or something like that 😉😎

  • @YooTooobJeff
    @YooTooobJeff 3 дні тому

Dave might be wrong in this instance conceptually, the contact points are the upper surfaces of the thumbwheels/ABR and the outermost edges of the post threads/ABR, BOTH tenuous transmission surfaces at best for any vibrations... BUT it may be those innocuous imperfections that in fact help make for the vintage sound overall...

Count me a UOA5 fan. I’m more of an A2 than an A5 lover to begin with, but find A2 magnets too soft on pick attack (but there are plenty of records cut with them that sound out perfect harmonics). A5 in general is too strident with all kinds of music (my opinion). Your demo seemed to verify that A5 scooped mid and sizzling high end (although I did think the single note stuff at 7.5 guitar vol was better with the A5…but that’s it). Thanks for the time and great demo. How is the rest of the jtm45 e-q’ed?

I know this may sound silly, but My question is ,what's the benchmark to to the classic Gibson les Paul tone? So when comparing all this stuff even with your favourite guitarist is, that even with the same guitar,(Bridge &Tailpiece) amp setup etc, the live tone is still different to say the treated recorded studio tone etc, so what is the benchmark tone? if that makes sense? Its like chasing the wind a bit, there a such minor subtle differences that its almost impossible to hit the holly grail tonal target , which is so subjective anyway in my opinion.😅
